Charity to restore ponds to pre-industrial levels, protecting threatened species and helping them to survive global warming
UK officials want to weaken European proposed laws that would limit the UK’s emissions – but which they say will boost bills and cut supplies

Des chercheurs ont découverts que plus de 8.000 vétérans sont actuellement derrière les barreaux, la plus grande partie ont servi leur pays en Irak ou en Afghanistan. Une proportion élevée des condamnés interrogés pendant l’étude a souffert d’une forme de désordre de stress post traumatique après avoir quitté l’armée. Souvent leurs condamnations étaient pour usage de violences liées à la prise de drogues ou d’alcool.
More than 8,000 veterans are currently behind bars, many of whom have served their country in Iraq or Afghanistan, researchers found. A high proportion of the convicts interviewed in the study had suffered some form of post-traumatic stress disorder after leaving the forces. Often their convictions were for drug- or alcohol-related violence.
The Government has been taken to the High Court today to defend its failure to lift vulnerable people out of fuel poverty. The judicial review is being brought by the two charities in the only case of its kind examining fuel poverty policy.
Reacting to news that GM seeds which pose a "very serious" risk [1] to the environment have been accidentally planted at three locations in Scotland, Friends of the Earth Scotland’s Director, Duncan McLaren, said:
"Yet again unauthorised GM seeds have been illegally planted in Britain. This highlights the fact that the safety regulations governing this technology are still far too weak.
The Government can stop the suffering caused by rocketing energy bills if it follows a ten-point Fuel Poverty Charter launched by fuel poverty experts from a range of charities and consumer bodies today. The Charter criticises the Government for failing to do enough to help people struggling to pay their fuel bills. The experts are calling on Ministers to ramp up energy efficiency and renewable energy measures for homes, make the energy market fairer for consumers, reform the Fuel Poverty Strategy and take action to increase the incomes of those who can’t afford to heat and power their homes.
Environmental Audit Committee urges Treasury to consider ‘car scrappage scheme’
Today’s call by a committee of MPs for the Treasury to consider a ‘car scrappage scheme’ that would offer the drivers of gas-guzzling cars a payment to trade their vehicle for a more efficient model, has been welcomed by Friends of the Earth - which suggested such a scheme when it gave evidence to the committee.
A new survey by Friends of the Earth, reveals that most animal products sold in supermarkets, including milk, cheese and meat, come from animals fed on GM feeds [1]. But consumers are not aware of what they are buying, with five out of 10 supermarkets failing to tell customers when food comes from animals fed on genetically modified feed.
